We welcome once more the fabulous Chris Ingham in another of his wonderful ‘tribute’ programmes, which have proved so popular with JASG audiences - this time to the great pianist/ composer Billie Strayhorn. Billie began his musical life as a classical concert pianist of renown and writer of successful musical comedies, but a chance encounter with Duke Ellington led to his being employed full time as Ellington’s amanuensis, and his harmonic abilities were responsible to a large degree for the inimitable Ellington big band harmonic ‘sound’. His arrangements for the band were invaluable, and his own compositions included numerous Ellington numbers such as ‘Take the A Train’ (which he composed on being given directions by Ellington to reach their first meeting!); Satin Doll; Lush Life etc.
The outstanding sax player Mark Crooks will be guesting with Ingham’s trio - a night not to be missed!
